Congressional Cemetery to Honor Battle of Bladensburg Veterans

Join the Historic Congressional Cemetery for a Battle of Bladensburg Wreath Laying Ceremony.

In collaboration with the District of Columbia National Guard, the ceremony will feature remarks and a wreath laying at the grave of Private Andrew Coyle. Attendees are also invited to help place commemorative flags at the gravesites of veterans of the Battle of Bladensburg and the War of 1812. Attendees are also invited to explore historical artifacts in the cemetery chapel.

This year marks the 212th anniversary of the Battle of Bladensburg, where members of the DC Militia joined American forces in the defense of Washington during the War of 1812. Dozens of these citizen-soldiers are now interred at Congressional Cemetery.

The ceremony will take place on Sunday, Aug. 23, at 10 a.m. at the cemetery (1801 E St. SE) and is free and open to the public. Dogs, excluding service animals, will not be permitted. Advanced registration is requested. RSVP to attend here.
