Honoring Irish-American Sacrifice at the Arsenal Monument

The Historic Congressional Cemetery will host a remembrance and wreath laying ceremony to honor the Irish immigrant women who lost their lives in the Washington Arsenal explosion during the Civil War in 1864.

The event will take place on Friday, March 27, at the Arsenal Monument (1801 E St. SE) from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. The monument stands as a memorial for those who lost their lives, but also as a reminder of the role immigrant women played in shaping Washington, DC and the United States. Their story reflects courage in the face of hardship and underscores the enduring relationship between Ireland and the US.

The commemoration will include a remembrance and wreath laying ceremony at the monument and feature remarks from Executive Director Mark Hudson and Irish Ambassador to the United States Her Excellency Geraldine Byrne Nason.

This event is free and open to the public. Register to attend here.
