New Treasurer for Navy Yard ANC

Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC) 6/8F met both in-person at 250 M St. SE and on line via Zoom Sept. 16. On the dias were Commissioners Vice Chair Markita Bryant (6/8F02), Chair Brian Strege (6/8F03), Secretary Edward Daniels (6/8F04) and Commissioner Nic Wilson (6/8F01). There is a vacancy in 6/8F05 as of Sept. 15.

ANC 8F voted to elect Nic Wilson as their new treasurer by acclamation. Wilson, who had been on work-related travel, flew home to the District and drove directly to the meeting for the election, which was presided over by former Office of ANCs (OANC) Executive Director and current ANC 6D Chair Gottleib Simon (6D02).

The election –and the vacancy– became official when Commissioner Liam Goodwin (6/8F05), formerly Treasurer for ANC 8F, resigned effective Sept. 15. Chair Strege said it was not clear what motivated Goodwin’s resignation, noting that he did not ask Goodwin to provide an explanation.

Simon said one of the reasons that the commission was eager to conduct an election is that under DC law, an ANC is not permitted to make any expenditures while there is a vacancy in the office of treasurer. The election was therefore necessary for the commission to conduct much of its ordinary business.

A vacancy notice was published in the DC register on Sept. 26. Any resident of Single Member District (SMD) 6/8F05 can run for the office. The signature period, during which candidates for the open position must have 25 residents of the SMD sign their nominating petition, is from Monday Sept. 29 to Oct. 20.

“I very much enjoyed working with Commissioner Goodwin,” said Chair Strege at the meeting, noting that Goodwin has resigned with his customary attention to detail, submitting the correct forms and completing the reports that the commission would vote on at the meeting. “[it] doesn’t sound like he was thrilled to have to resign, so I wish him the best.”

Bryant seconded those sentiments. “He was a very good Commissioner. We all worked well together, and so he will be dearly missed with us, but hope, hopefully we can see him in the near future,” she said.
