Open Streets Capitol Hill Saturday

For the first time in Open Streets DC history, the 2025 event will take place on Capitol Hill, on June 28 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Closed to vehicles from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. will be North Carolina Avenue SE from Sixth Street SE to Lincoln Park and Massachusetts Avenue from the park to 17th Street. The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) has permitted Lincoln Park for programming, neighborhood planner Paige Leddy told ANC commissioners in May.

The purpose of Open Streets is to focus on community building and transportation safety. So popular activations often include free fitness classes, live music, safety demonstrations, bike giveaways or bike maintenance, Leddy said.

Enter the event in style with the Hill Family Biking (HFB) special Open Streets parade, starting 10:30 a.m. at Seward Square!

Open Streets is coming to Capitol Hill for the first time ever — and Hill Family Biking (HFB) is leading the celebration with a 1-mile bike parade starting at 10:30am from Seward Square!

The ride will finish at 17th and Massachusetts Avenue with a HFB-inspired street chalk mural, created in partnership with ChalkRiot.

Then join in From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., you’ll find entertainment, fitness, foam and fun centered on Lincoln Park and on the playground side of Eastern Market Metro Plaza (EMMP) Park but all along the route, too. See below for the schedules, courtesy DDOT.

The DDOT team will not have street vendors but say they will prioritize businesses within Ward six that focus on health and transportation. There will be bathrooms and water stations. There is no cost to attend.

Leddy said that DDOT will work with the local community, the Main Street organizations and businesses and vendors at Eastern Market to ensure the event showcases priorities in the neighborhood. You’ll find representatives from your Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC), local main streets and Business Improvement Districts and much more.

Bus and Vehicle Detours

All vehicles will be detoured around the event route between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. on June 28th. This includes the 90, 92 and 96 bus routes. Detour maps can be found for vehicular traffic  here and the WMATA bus detour plans here.

Residents in the area should pay attention to street signage as vehicles will need to be removed from the route at midnight FRIDAY, JUNE 27 the night before.
