Arrest Made in C Street NE Hit and Run

Police have made an arrest in the Oct. 4 hit and run that left a 6-year-old boy injured.

A 64-year-old Northeast man was arrested Wednesday, Oct. 18 and charged with leaving after colliding.

The man is a resident of the District. However, witnesses reported that the vehicle had Virginia plates. A search of those plates showed no outstanding fines.

The car was recovered and subjected to forensics within a week of the incident, but the arrest comes two weeks later.

Video of the incident shared on social media brought cries of shock, outrage and deep sympathy for the family. The six-year-old, his mother and older sister were crossing C Street NE Oct. 4 at about 5:40 p.m. They had reached the middle of the crosswalk on the west side of 12th Street NE.

That’s when a car that had slowed at the stop sign on the east side of the street began moving, accelerating and hitting the family in the middle of the street. The car stopped on top of the six-year-old’s left foot.

The mother, her eldest child and the family dog suffered minor physical injuries. The 6-year-old suffered a broken foot.

After a passerby instructed the driver to pull over, he instead fled. He is charged with Leaving After Colliding. Currently, the charge carries up to $1,000 fine and up to six months in jail.
