On Thursday, Detectives from Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) announced that an arrest has been made in the assault on a Congresswoman Angie Craid (MN-D) that happened Thursday, Feb. 9 2023, in the elevator of the apartment complex on the 300 block of H Street NE.
Reports indicate that at around 7:10 a.m., the man entered the lobby and began exercising there. Then, he approached the victim inside of an elevator, at the listed location and grabbed her neck. Craig defended herself by throwing her coffee at him. The suspect then fled the scene.
The attack did not appear to be politically motivated.
Craig’s office said she was bruised, but recovering, and asked for privacy at this time.
“My morning coffee really saved the day yesterday, but not exactly how I expected it to,” Craig said in a statement issued by her office Feb. 10. “On a serious note, I will also say that I was very, very lucky that I was not more injured – and I’ll have more to say about that soon.”
She said she was thankful for the outpouring of support from friends, constituents and colleagues .
On Thursday, February 9, 2023, as a result of the detectives’ investigation, a 26-year-old resident of no fixed address was arrested and charged with simple assault.
“I remain deeply grateful to the law enforcement officers for their quick response and subsequent arrest of a suspect last night,” Craig continued. “I feel very fortunate to have escaped following the attack and be home in Minnesota today recovering.”
