There was some excitement Friday morning at the Capitol Hill Safeway (415 14th St. SE). DC Fire Emergency Medical Services (DC FEMS) were called to the grocery store and pharmacy around 10:30 a.m. for reports of a fire.
Security and firefighters asked staff and shoppers to vacate the store. Several engines and a pumper truck were on the scene. Although both the ladder and hose were deployed, neither appear to have been used.
The intersection of Kentucky and C Streets SE was closed briefly as crews investigated. Nearby DC Department of Public Works (DPW) crews in the process of collecting leaves along 14th Street SE were moved temporarily out of caution.

A spokesperson for DC Fire EMS said there was a small fire contained to an area beneath a cooler in aisle 8 of the store. The fire was extinguished quickly and there were no injuries.
Shopping resumed at the store shortly after the scene was declared safe, prior to noon.
