A woman was seriously injured when the grate she stepped on collapsed early Wednesday evening, causing her to fall 10 feet down an air well.

The air well or shaft was located on a sidewalk at the rear of 800 Fourth St. SW. The grate is on private property.

DC Fire Emergency Medical Services (DC Fire EMS) was called to the scene at 5:11 p.m.  Paramedics went down the shaft to the victim and started treatment immediately as she lay there as firefighters set up a pulley system.

Firefighters used the system, together with two ladders, to bring the victim up to the surface.

DC Fire said the woman was transported to hospital with serious but not life threatening injuries.
