A child was struck by the driver of a sports utility vehicle early Monday evening on Independence Avenue SE.

Officers said it happened just before 5 p.m. March 21. The driver was turning right from 15th Street onto Independence Avenue SE, near the 7-11 store, when he hit the boy, who was crossing in the crosswalk.

The boy was transported to hospital for treatment of what DC Fire Emergency Medical Services (DC FEMS) described as “serious but not life-threatening injuries.”

The driver remained on scene.

Police did not give the age of the victim.

According to District data, 92 pedestrians have been seriously injured and 19 killed on DC’s streets since March 21, 2021; a total of 42 people have died on city streets.
