The Hill Rag is profiling local shops in the lead-up to Small Business Saturday, Nov. 27. That date is set aside to celebrate the contribution of smaller businesses to the economy and job creation —and to encourage people to ‘Shop Small’ instead of making purchases at large online and big box stores.

Ms. Shannon is hiding behind the counter at Patrick’s Fine Linen (771 Wharf Ave. SW), resisting all the efforts of co-owner Troy Englert to coax her out.

The blind Bedlington terrier and her more social companion, Pineapple Jack, are omnipresent at the home and gift store run by Englert and his partner, Patrick Dempsey (the other McDreamy, Englert says).

Dempsey opened his first store in Alexandria, VA, 17 years ago. They moved to The Wharf a few months after the development was officially complete, opening their doors in early 2018. Englert says the experience has been wonderful. “The neighbors have just been awesome, that’s all I have to say,” he said.

They offer “everything about the home,” Englert says. Here, you can acquire cologne from Italy, shaving supplies from England, tableware from all over, jewelry from American Michael Aram.

“We’re a lifestyle store,” Englert says, explaining the variety. Succulents sit on armchairs beside tea sets. A harlequin poppet hangs near a china display. The shop is bright, fresh-smelling —and full.

Patrick’s Linen brings the owner’s own home into the shop. One in-house candle is made of soy and scented with magnolia flowers from Dempsey and Englert’s own back yard. They used to make the candles in their kitchen, before that became impossible, Englert says. Now, they’ve added a scent in honor of The Wharf to the collection.

They love the neighborhood, and Pineapple Jack welcomes every new customer at the door. It’s a family feel. “Once you’re a customer of ours, we’d like to keep you forever,” Englert tells me, as his puppy turns to welcome someone else.

Dempsey offers design services for home and office. A second shop is set to open at Tyson’s Corner (2001 International Drive, McLean, VA ) Wednesday, Nov. 24.
