The Howl to the Chief Howl-o-ween Doggie Costume Contest set a record this year with over 125 entries –and a separate record for zebras. The parade stepped off around 2 p.m. Oct. 30 in the square at Lincoln Park.

“I hope all the contestants enjoyed the swag bags and all the spectators had a great time,” said Howl to the Chief owner and contest founder Kim Hawkins.

In addition to the costumed cuties, there was also be a Parade of Adoptable Dogs. Rural Dog Rescue was at the event with their adorable adoptable pets.

It is the eighth year for the annual costume contest, which has run every year except last since Hawkins purchased the former Chateau Animeaux in February 2012, renaming it Howl to the Chief. The store recently relocated down the street to 719 Eighth St SE.

Howloween costumes can be counted on to incorporate tongue-in-cheek social commentary with pop culture references. This year’s participants included the Maryland Zebras, Ted Lasso, Zoom meetings and an appearance by the derailed 7000-series car.
