Man Shot Near Watkins Elementary

A man was killed Wednesday night in the fields at Watkins Recreation Center (420 12th St. SE). The fields are shared by Watkins Elementary School.

Reports indicated there had been a pick-up football game on the field and that the man was a participant. Residents reported hearing up the sound of up to 12 gunshots in the area

Police said that they were called to the scene around 9:47 p.m. Oct. 6. Upon arrival on the 400 block of 13th St. SE, they found an adult male who was unconscious and not breathing with a gunshot wound to the chest.

The suspect fleeing the scene was described as a Black male approximately 5’9” tall in his 20s. He was last observed running southbound towards D Street SE.

Students were not scheduled to attend classes at the school Thursday due to DCPS parent-teacher conferences.

The Metropolitan Police Department offers a reward of up to $25,000 to anyone providing information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for a homicide committeed in the District of Columbia.
