Do you have some parking ticket fines that have ballooned out of control?
On Monday, April 19, Mayor Muriel Bowser (D) announced a new four month ticket amnesty that will allow drivers to pay outstanding vehicle-related tickets.
The amnesty covers parking, photo enforcement (incuding speed, red-light and stop-sign cameras) and minor moving violations issued by law enforcement.
The amnesty program will begin on June 1 and run through September 30.
The program covers all tickets issues on or before September 30, 2021 –even those issued prior to the pandemic. All penalties or late fees on the tickets will be waived. Only the original ticket fee will need to be paid.
Any ticket issued prior to Sept 30 2021 qualifies for the amnesty program, said Deputy Mayor for Operations and Infrastructure (DMOI) Lucinda Babers, speaking at the press conference, even if issued in 2019. She estimated there is about $400 million it outstanding parking tickets and that, if all those eligible take advantage of the program it would bring in approximately half that amount.
