Work With Guerrilla Gardeners, Neighbors to Finish Job on Improved Parks

436

Guerrilla Gardeners of Washington DC is teaming up with Brothas Huddle and the residents of Potomac Gardens to landscape two adjacent parcels known as Potomac Triangle Parks, Commissioner Kelly Waud (6B07) announced at the Sept. 8 meeting of Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC) 6B —and they’re looking for volunteers to help!

“I’m really very excited about this,” Waud said. “I can’t stop smiling and grinning about this happening.”

Guerrilla Gardeners, whose work includes garden beds near Eighth and I Streets SE and near the Marine Barracks has committed to the project for the next five years.

Several years ago, the Potomac Triangle Parks were renovated but the government funding ran out before any landscaping could be done. Provisions for upkeep were also not established, resulting in the current conditions wrought by neglect.

The collaboration aims to change that, hoping to empower the residents of the community to assume collective “ownership” of these spaces in order to improve and maintain them for their own use and benefit through “sweat equity.”

Once work is complete, volunteers and the community can celebrate the work when the garden is dedicated in a Garden Day ceremony at 10 a.m. Sept. 27.

You can support and assist this effort with donations and physical labor. Sign up or donate at: https://guerrillagardenersdc.org

Donations are 100 percent tax-deductible and will be used to support these volunteers and their work as well as establish a dedicated fund for continued upkeep and enhancement.

All donations collected through this link will be used for this project only. Reaching the campaign goal will ensure these parks will be maintained and further developed through the end of 2025.
