The artist, Courtney Applequist is a painter living and working in the DC area. She works mainly in oil, pastel and charcoal. Her work comes from careful observation and sensorial memory of the seen world, employing the use of found geometries & colors to imply the essence of a moment.

Of her work, Applequist says, “I find that the thoughts I initially bring to a piece are nothing more than that: a beginning, and I am driven to a new place as the piece is changed, destroyed, renewed, and ultimately the moment comes into focus – while echoes of the process still peek through, influencing what is ultimately seen.”

There are so many amazing local artists and artisans. It’s no secret that DC is home to hundreds of creatives who design, craft, roast, stitch, bake, weld, brew and build amazing products – and there is a retail initiative dedicated to helping them grow.

Founded by Stacey Price of People Make Place and Michael Babin of Neighborhood Restaurant Group, Shop Made in DC is a retail initiative with a mission to grow DC’s makers and artists. As the first store dedicated to only Made in DC products, the four locations in Dupont Circle, Georgetown, the Wharf and Canopy Embassy Row, are home to over 200 makers and nearly 5,000 MADE IN DC products including apothecary, apparel, art, furniture, jewelry, home decor and stationery.
