SW Action and the Southwest Voice, along with the Southwest faith community have organized a rally for racial justice for Friday, June 12th, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the intersection of Fourth and M Streets SW.
During the rally there will be a 8 minute and 46 second moment of silence for George Floyd. That is the length of time Floyd lay on the street with the knee of a Minneapolis police officer on his neck. The names of people who died in police custody will be read aloud. Members of the southwest community will speak about their experiences and aspirations. Participants are encouraged to bring their own instruments to make music.
SW Action will be passing out copies of their report Promoting Social and Economic Equity in Southwest, which makes recommendations to advance equity in the area. You can read and, if desired, add your signature to the report by visiting https://bit.ly/signswaction
Attendees are encouraged to bring water and masks. Extra supplies will be donated to the Ward 6 Mutual Aid Network. Bring signs to show support for Black Lives Matter and expect to maintain physical distance during the rally.
The group meets from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. on the first Sunday of every month. Email [email protected] for the location.
