Nancy B. Smalley passed away on May 2nd, 2020. Nancy was born and raised in New Jersey as an only child. Nancy came to Washington D.C. and worked in graphic design. She lived on South Carolina Avenue SE starting in the early 1990s – where she met and married her late husband Harold A. Smalley.

Nancy was eccentric yet warm. From her blue eye-shadow to unique earrings and bangles, Nancy had an appreciation for art and design. A frequent patron of the Pretzel Bakery, she was quick to offer a sweet hello and chat while enjoying an iced mocha. She befriended many, including young children who were drawn to her friendliness and sense of fashion. Nancy was passionate about animals – her testimony at DC City Council in the 1990s helped result in the passage of current animal protection laws in the city.

While Nancy had no children of her own, her friends and neighbors from the Hill East neighborhood will miss her dearly. There will be no service at this time.

Emily O’Connor and her husband, Reilly, and children Grace and Cormick are Pretzel Bakery regulars. They were friends and neighbors of Nancy Smalley. You can reach Emily at hayden.ea@gmail.com or 202-697-3414.
