Fairy Godmother Books and Toys (319 Seventh St. SE) is now open for curbside and front door pick-up!

The Eastern Market children’s favorite received a waiver from the District Educational and Academic Retail Shops (EARS) Pilot allowing them to offer pick-up.

Co-owner Roberta Blanchard has run the shop together with her husband Jack for more than 35 years. She said that interested shoppers can call or email the shop with requests, be they very specific, such as a teddy bear or, cars or more general such as a children’s book for a five-year-old.

The Blanchards also do shopping consultations for those looking for a children’s gift. Call or email the store with your needs, ideas and thoughts, and they will provide you with a host of recommendations to select from.

“It’s sort of concierge selling,” Roberta Blanchard said, “we’re gathering an assortment of items in a basket, and putting them outside for them to choose.”

Call 202-547-5474 to place orders or do a consultation. Leave a voicemail anytime, or email [email protected]. Blanchard said a website is in the works and should be online soon.

Blanchard says this information helps them curate a basket:

  • Who the gift is for (relation to you, what the child is like)
  • How old the child is
  • What their interests are
  • Where they live

The Blanchards have selected a collection of fiction and nonfiction books, puzzles, dress up and animal and fantasy figurines. They carry an array of choices for kids from infant to teen and everything in between, including the famous Steiff plush toys and collectables, and book-themed onesies and totes. They also have crafts, science kits and fiction and non-fiction books (including some in Spanish), fire trucks, Lego, dress-up toys and more.

Fairy Godmother Children’s Books and Toys is open Tuesday to Friday from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. They are closed Mondays.
