On March 24, a couple of hours before the Mayor announced her decision to shut down District restaurant dine-in services, Sonoma Restaurant & WIne Bar (223 Pennsylvania Ave. SE) decided to close.
“We opted out of delivery service to add an extra measure of safety for our staff and clientele,” said Sonoma General Manager Karima Ouazzani. The restaurant has committed to rehiring all employees when they are able to reopen.
However, after more than a month of being furloughed, management says many employees are not getting enough aid and support to cover their basic expenses to feed their families or pay their rent. While management is working to prepare Sonoma for reopening as soon as it is safe and permitted, they say they cannot afford to keep paying staff.
