The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) will temporarily close the left lanes both outbound and inbound between 11th and Ninth Street NE beginning October 23 as part of the Maryland Avenue NE Safety Project.
The temporary lane closures will be in place from 9:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday from October 23 until November 5, 2019, weather and construction conditions permitting.
During this time, left turns from single lanes will be prohibited. Emergency No Parking Signs will be posted in the parking lane between 11th Street NE and 10th Street NE.
The lane closures are needed to remove the median and to perform electrical work.
Traffic control signs will be in place to guide all roadway users through the new traffic corridor. Motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists are urged to stay alert and use caution when traveling through the work zone.
The Maryland Avenue NE project is intended to improve safety and access for bikes, pedestrians, and cars on the corridor between Second and 14th Streets NE. The project includes new lighting, traffic signals, high visibility crosswalks, traffic calming, shorter crossing distances for pedestrians and new bike lanes.
DDOT anticipates the project will be complete by Summer 2021.
