In 1984, President Ronald Reagan designated July as National Ice Cream Month and the third Sunday of the month as National Ice Cream Day. In the proclamation, President Reagan called for all people of the United States to observe these events with “appropriate ceremonies and activities.”
Well, Washington DC’s Hometown Candy Company The Capital Candy Jar has answered the call with one such activity taking place this weekend. The local sweet shop will offer $1.50 scoops of small-batch ice cream from local makers Ice Cream Jubilee and South Mountain Creamery to celebrate National Ice Cream Day.
The $1.50 scoop special will take place from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday, July 20 and Sunday, July 21 at The Capital Candy Jar (201 15th St. NE).
Featured ice cream flavors from each will include
Ice Cream Jubilee’s:
- Honey Lemon Lavender
- Cookies and Cookie Dough
- Passionfruit Guava Sorbet (vegan)
South Mountain Creamery’s:
- Mint Chocolate Chip
- Moo Tracks (a chocolate peanut butter sensation)
- Salted Caramel Swirl
- Strawberry
- Blueberry Cheesecake Swirl
Visitors can also check out the Capital Candy Jar’s full line of hand-dipped chocolate covered Oreos and pretzels along with handmade lollipops, marshmallows, and many other treats while at the store.
The Capital Candy Jar has locally made chocolate, and other candy treats sold in gourmet grocery stores, gift shops, and coffee shops all over the DC metro area since 2014. The Capitol Hill location opened in 2017, where founder Dave Burton creates confections by hand every day for shop visitors or to add the tasty treats to weddings, corporate events, and office parties.
