Smithsonian Celebrates Moon Landing on National Mall

Weekend Event Involves Sight, Sound and Road Closures

The Full Moon is pictured by an Expedition 57 crew member as the International Space Station orbited 252 miles above the Indian Ocean about 1,000 kilometers due south of India.

On Friday, July 19, and Saturday, July 20 the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum will celebrate the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11’s trip to the moon with a 17-minute show, Apollo 50: Go for the Moon.

This event will take place on the National Mall with a free 17-minute show to run three times on both nights: 9:30 p.m., 10:30 p.m., and 11:30 p.m.

For this event, the image of the Saturn V rocket will be projected on to the east side of the Washington Monument beginning on Tuesday, July 16, 2019 through Saturday, July 20, 2019.

In conjunction with this event, there will be several street closures that motorists should take into consideration along with amplified sound during the 17-minute show.

On Monday, July 15, 2019 and Tuesday, July 16, 2019, the public should expect periodic sound checks by the production team for this weekend’s event.  The sound checks will include songs, speaking parts, and the recreation of the launch of the Saturn V rocket.  On Friday, July 19, 2019 and Saturday, July 20, 2019, the audio will be played for the duration of each 17-minute show and will include the sound of the rocket launching.

No Parking Locations

The following streets will be posted as Emergency No Parking for the event on Friday, July 19, 2019 and Saturday, July 20, 2019 from 4:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m.:

  • Madison Drive from 15th Street to Seventh Street NW
  • Jefferson Drive from 15th Street to Seventh Street SW

Street Closures

The following streets will be closed for the event on Friday, July 19, 2019 and Saturday, July 20, 2019 from approximately 5:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m.:

  • Madison Drive from 15th Street to Seventh Street NW
  • Jefferson Drive from 15th Street to Seventh Street SW

The following streets will be closed for the event on Friday, July 19, 2019 and Saturday, July 20, 2019 from approximately 8:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m.:

  • 14th Street from Independence to Constitution Avenue, NW
  • 15th Street from Independence to Constitution Avenue, NW

The public should expect parking restrictions along the street and should be guided by the posted emergency no parking signage.  All vehicles that are parked in violation of the emergency no parking signs will be ticketed and towed.
