Casey Trees needs volunteers to join them at Robert F. Kennedy (RFK) Stadium as they collect important information about trees in Southeast.
Work with Casey Trees to inventory the trees growing along the campus in advance of redevelopment plans. During this joint advocacy-citizen science event, learn more about how D.C. plans to revitalize this area and how to influence those plans through advocacy.
Dignitaries broke ground on three multi-purpose fields on the Robert F. Kennedy Stadium Campus August 29. The fields are the first element to become a reality from the short-term plans for the site. Plans include five components: the multipurpose fields, a market hall, a sports and recreation complex, pedestrian bridges connecting the west and east banks of the Anacostia River to Heritage and Kingman Islands and the RFK Democracy Center, a planned new memorial site for Robert F. Kennedy, for whom the stadium is named.
The data collected during this inventory will be instrumental as advocacy volunteers work to prioritize trees in the new designs.
This event is perfect for volunteers who love science, trees and promoting green developments. Come put tree skills to the test and take in some fresh air with fellow nature enthusiasts.
Participants will receive a short, hands-on training on site. After learning the tools and techniques, participants will split into groups and begin assessing trees. Teams will document tree species, height, diameter of trunks, width of crowns, overall health and more.
The event is open to the general public. No prior experience is necessary, just register online. If you have participated in one of the Casey Trees Forester Courses, especially Trees 101 or Trees 201, this will could be a great way to put your knowledge into action.
The inventory will take place rain, shine or with frosty temperatures. Volunteers should wear appropriate clothing and comfortable shoes for walking short distances. Participants are welcome to bring water and light snacks. Register online, as participants will be emailed a detailed map closer to the inventory date.
