DC Water Issues Warning About Telephone Scam

Caller Claims Staff Need to Check Quality of Water

1982

DC Water issued a warning to customers Tuesday about an ongoing telephone scam. Customers reported that they had received calls from a caller claiming to speak for DC Water telling them that agency staff would be coming to their homes to “check on the quality of their water.”

No such calls are being made by DC Water, said the District authority, adding that the calls were likely being made by someone attempting to impersonate a DC Water technician in order to gain access to homes, likely in order to rob them.

Spokesman for DC Water Vince Morris said that DC Water “rarely makes calls like this unsolicited, and if anyone comes by [a customer home] they would be driving a DC Water vehicle and have a DC Water ID badge.”

If you receive a call from a person claiming to be from DC Water asking to visit your home to check the quality of the water, DC Water reminds you not to share any personal information or allow access to your home.

If you do receive this call, please report it by calling 202-354-3724.
