Suspect Shot in Struggle at Waterfront Safeway

At 6 a.m. Saturday Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) First District officers responded to a call for service and responded to the Safeway located at 1100 Fourth Street SW (near Waterfront Metro Station), for an assault on a police officer.

A suspect was attempting to steal several items and leave the store without paying for the items. The Special Police Officer (SPO) working at the Safeway stopped him as he tried to exit.  The suspect began to fight the SPO, grabbing the SPO’s service weapon. After a brief struggle, the suspect was shot in the leg. The SPO was able to retrieve his weapon from the suspect before the suspect ran away.

Shortly thereafter, members of the Fifth District received a call for service for a man that was shot at the Rhode Island Avenue Metro Station.  Subsequent investigation revealed that this person was the same suspect that fled from Safeway after assaulting the SPO.  The suspect was identified and placed under arrest.
