The Atlas INTERSECTIONS Festival runs from Feb 22 – March 11th. Now in its 9th season, the festival presents excellent art in all its forms to inspire a community to connect and create a vibrant neighborhood, city, and world.
INTERSECTIONS is a key layer in the District’s dynamic arts scene. New this year are the workshop series and expanded Youth Summit – a full day of performances by young people followed by a youth-led summit.
As part of the festival, there will be many performances for kids! Bring the whole family for youth-oriented performances and activities Saturday mornings during the festival. The lobby will be filled with music, an interactive Creation Station, and more to entertain and engage even the youngest arts enthusiast.
Theatre for the Very Young will present Inside Out, a show best suited to kids aged 1-5; Feb. 24, 25, 28. Things can get a little messy when playing dress-up. But imaginations also go wild when scarves become birds, t-shirts become monsters, and a sock dance rocks the closet! In this interactive show, discover the joy of turning things inside out.
On Family Fun Day, February 24th, see the In Series presentation of Bastian and Bastiana, It’s a “once upon a time” story of love, magic, and sheep. Mozart’s charming fairy tale of a shepherdess and her former sweetheart who must seek the help of the local magician to bring them back together. This family opera is the perfect kids introduction to opera & theatre.
Other presentations on the same family Fun Day include Shakespeare for the Young: The Tiniest Tempest and Dreamcatcher Entertainment’s Billosophy: For Kids.
Shows for kids continue on Saturdays in March. On March 3rd, these include the Really Spicy Opera: The Princess Pirate Party Musical and the Kidz Musiq Club: Jazzing Up Learning.
The March 10th Youth Summit features a showcase performance followed by a group discussion about how art can impact a community. Showcase performances by Raqs Habibi World Dance Company, GenOUT Chorus, Capitol Movement Pre-Professional Dance Company, Dance Institute of Washington, Elements Dance Company, The After School Dance Fund, City at Peace are best suited to youth 13 years and older.
