Frank Iero and The Patience Keep the Great Tracks Coming

Keep the Coffins Coming, the brand new four-song EP from Frank Iero and the Patience, continues the artist’s commitment to making the kind of music that is driven by art and soul, punk roots and an ongoing romance with rock and roll. Coming on the heels of the band’s 2016 release, Parachutes, the EP assumes its place as “the missing link,” (aptly described as such by Iero) between this album and the band’s earlier inaugural solo endeavor, Stomachaches.

The four new tracks on Keep the Coffins Coming each occupy a different rung on this band’s emotive ladder. My favorite happens to be the final one, a remake of the well-known You Are My Sunshine, which Frank Iero makes his own through a raw and wailing tribute. This oddly haunting song traditionally belies its own meaning with a simple delivery, but in this version, Iero matches the potential loss and devastation the lyrics imply with chaotic chords and explosive vocals.

Similarly, the EP’s opening track, a more refined yet no less heartfelt, I’m a Mess (first released on Parachutes), reconfirms Iero’s artistry, his soulfulness and his energetic embrace of a musical trajectory that began with punk and moved towards emo and beyond. No Fun Club, a less than two-minute frenzied tumult, shows just how far the band can go, revealing their best version of catharsis; indeed, it is a tiny glimpse of the raw and frenzied energy that any Iero show regular will recognize.

It’s not easy for nearing middle-aged artists – or parents – to reach teenagers, but Frank Iero manages the trick with frightening ease. He sings directly to the angst of youth and maybe the inner problem child of their parents as well. And it hardly matters that he grew up in a very different world, before history could be summoned from the Internet in seconds.

Keep the Coffins Coming speaks to Iero’s loyal fan base with the inclusion of the long-time concert sing along favorite, BFF, making this all but a certainty. For those of us who came a bit late to the Frank Iero celebration, Keep the Coffins Coming will be yet another party bag that we will continue to unpack with appreciation and delight.
